A basin wrench is a specialty tool that every plumber and DIY enthusiast owns and has in their tools collection. The tool is designed to install or remove a faucet, and they are very effective for performing this one function. Once you learn how to use it, it will become an easy tool to use. The kitchen and bathroom faucets are secured with the help of low-profile mounting nuts that are accessible only on the bottom side of the sink behind the basin; then, there is no use of standard pliers and wrenches; however, the basin wrench can get the job done with ease and effectiveness.
The main thing you need to use in a basin wrench is a claw head that can grab onto the mounting nut. The head can then be rotated and adjusted clockwise and counterclockwise. This direction will be determined by whether you want to tighten or loosen the nut.
Depending on the application, it is always important to set up the wrench correctly before using it to get the job done. This must be done before you get under the sink. To begin, hold the wrench upright so that the head is on top.
If you want to open a faucet, then the opening of the claw must be facing right. And for this, you need to turn the wrench in a counterclockwise direction after attaching it to the nut.
In contrast, if you want to install a new faucet or tighten up an existing one, the wrench claw head must be facing left, and the wrench should be turned clockwise.
You will get under the sink in this step, which can be an uncomfortable situation. Move the basin wrench up to the bottom of the sink and then place it around the mounting nut. The claw head will then grip the notches of the nut. You can reposition the claw head depending on whether you need to move to work in a comfortable position with the best leverage.
When using the T-bar, use both of your hands to turn the wrench. This will provide you with more leverage than turning the shaft. You can also slide the T-bar to the other side of the shaft to position it in a way to has more space.
It can sometimes get tricky to remove the nut when it’s old and corroded. You can use penetration oil to loosen it up a bit in such cases. A basin wrench can effectively loosen or tighten the mounting nut of a faucet. But once you learn how to use it properly, you can get a lot of home plumbing projects done.
If you want to deal with faucet nuts and do not have a basin wrench, it can get complicated. To install a new faucet or open an existing one, you will need various other tools. If your task involves working behind the basin and you have no specialized wrench, then you might need the following tools:
