The principal purpose of these grilles is to protect the driver element and the speaker's interior (and other audio devices) from foreign objects while improving sound transmission. However, because it is in the straight path of the driver, the grill interferes with the sound it creates.
There may be slight sonic differences when the grilles are removed, but they will be small and go down to a certain degree of safety and sound.
