A temperature calibrator is a device used to ensure and maintain the accuracy of temperature-measuring instruments. These devices are indispensable for professionals, including technicians, engineers, and electricians, who calibrate multiple devices and instruments, including thermocouples, RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors), and thermostats. Temperature calibrators come in either digital or analogue formats, are portable, lightweight, and provide accurate measurements. Additionally, using temperature calibrators offers multiple benefits in terms of accuracy in measurements, quality control and safety, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with regulations. Working Principle of Temperature Calibrators
A temperature calibrator typically includes a heat source (and/or cooling) that can be precisely controlled to a specific temperature. The temperature sensor to be calibrated is inserted into the calibrator, along with a reference sensor with known accuracy. The readings of the two sensors are then compared at different temperatures to determine if the sensor being calibrated is accurate.
Popular Types of Temperature Calibrators
Temperature calibrators come in various types, the following being the most common types:
- Dry Well Calibrators – Also called a dry block calibrator, a dry well calibrator is the most widely used and versatile temperature calibration tool used to calibrate various temperature sensors, including RTDs and thermistors.
- Thermocouple Calibrators – A thermocouple calibrator is a device designed to verify and adjust the accuracy of thermocouples – sensors that convert temperature variations into electrical signals. These calibrators can calibrate multiple devices, including transmitters, recorders, meters, controllers, and data loggers.
- RTD Calibrators – An RTD calibrator is a specialised instrument used to calibrate RTDs –temperature sensors that work by changing their electrical resistance in response to temperature variations. RTD calibrators function similarly to thermocouple calibrators, generating a known temperature and measuring the RTD's resistance.
- Handheld Calibrators – These are portable calibrators that can simulate and measure temperature signals. A handheld temperature calibrator is ideal for field calibration.
