A TRIAC stands for triode for alternating current, and it is also referred to as a bidirectional triode thyristor, which is a silicon semiconductor equipment consisting of three terminals or legs that ensure the flow of the current in both directions by the time it is triggered. The main purpose of using a TRIAC is as a low-medium power semi-latching switch. This device functions the same as two standard thyristors but is not directly connected in one direction or back-to-back. To make it functional, a voltage must be applied to the terminal that consists of a gate. This device can be activated using negative or positive voltages, unlike SCRs, which need a positive voltage. When this TRIAC current is activated, it will continue to manage if there is no longer any supply to the gate.
