This whole process in which the circuit samples and freezes the voltage and generates the incoming signal is called sampling time. Similarly, the circuit that holds the processed value is called holding time. It won’t be a lie if we say that the capacitor acts as the critical component in a sample and hold circuit, charging up to its peak value before the switch is opened.
