Latching relays, also called stay relays or bistable relays, are a form of electrotechnical switch that maintains its state (open or close) after the control signal is eliminated. Their latching nature distinguishes them from conventional relays that require steady power to remain in a particular state. These relays are well-recognised for their bistable operation as they feature two stable points: set ON and rest OFF.
Latching or bistable relays, distinguished by their capacity to maintain their state without continuous power, obtain this "memory" function through distinct mechanisms, resulting in different types. Magnetic latching relays utilise a permanent magnet to hold the contacts in position, employing two coils (set and reset) or a single coil with a current reversal to switch states. Mechanical latching relays rely on a mechanical locking mechanism, like a spring-loaded lever, engaged by a pulse of current through either a single or dual coil configuration. Single-coil versions use successive pulses to toggle the state, while dual-coil versions work similarly to magnetic relays with dedicated set and reset coils.
Latching relays are valuable devices in applications where power efficiency, state retention, and remote control are paramount considerations. Their unique nature makes them suitable for a wide range of applications across various industries.
