Thermistor ICs

What are thermistor ICs?

A thermistor is installed in a broad selection of circuitry and printed circuit boards for temperature assessment, also for the current-limiting monitoring system. The resistance alteration of a thermistor is based on the ambient temperature of the component. The conduction model is used to classify thermistors. Thermistors with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) exhibit more resistance at higher temperatures than thermistors with a negative temperature coefficient (NTC). As a result, the resistance of a PTC thermistor is inversely proportional to temperature.

Types of thermistor ICs

Depending on the materials used, thermistors are classified into two types:

  • With an NTC thermistor, resistance decreases as the temperature rises, typically due to a rise in conduction electrons raised by thermal excitement from the valence shell. An NTC is typically used as a temperature detector, or in a sequence with a circuit as an inrush voltage confiner.
  • With PTC thermistors, withstand raises as the temperature rises, commonly due to enhancement in thermal lattice excitement, especially those that are not refined and imperfect. PTC thermistors are typically used in series with a circuit board and are employed to secure and resist overcurrent circumstances through resettable fuses.

Typical applications

  • As an alternative to fuses, as current-limiting devices for circuit protection. A minor degree of resistive heating results from current flowing through the device.
  • Most CRT displays use them as timers in the degaussing coil circuit. The thermistor and degaussing coil both experience current flow when the display unit is first turned on.
  • In the automobile industry, a heater is used to heat the diesel before engine injection in cold climates or to offer additional heat to the cabin when using a diesel engine.
  • In voltage-controlled oscillators for temperature-compensated synthesizers.
  • To provide the heat required to cause the wax to expand in an electrically powered wax motor.

NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) Thermistors are manufactured from sintered metal oxides. Each thermistor consists of a combination of two to four of the following materials: Manganese, Nickel, Cobalt and Copper. NTC thermistors are semiconductor resistors that exhibit decreasing resistance characteristics with increasing temperature. TDK thermistors have low thermal time constants which result in extremely high rates of resistance change to accurately track the temperature.
