Metal Halide Lamps

Metal halide lamps, also called metal halide discharge lamps, are a type of high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting system. These lamps produce powerful light by an electric arc through a gaseous mixture of vaporised mercury and metal halides. A metal halide lamp is a highly energy-efficient lighting fixture known for its excellent luminous efficiency, colour rendering, and longer lifespan. Metal halide lamps comprise an arc tube made of quartz or ceramic encased in an outer glass envelope. Additionally, these halide lamps also provide focused, directional lighting, making them a perfect choice for illuminating specific areas.

Why Buy Metal Halide Lamps?

Metal halide lamps offer a compelling combination of benefits that make them a popular choice for various lighting applications. Their high efficacy translates to significant energy savings compared to traditional incandescent lamps. Their powerful, bright, white light provides excellent colour rendering, and their long lifespan reduces maintenance costs and downtime. Additionally, with a variety of wattages, shapes, and sizes available, they cater to diverse lighting needs—from sports arenas and warehouses to retail spaces and street lighting.

  • Single-Ended: A single-ended lamp features an electrical connection on only one side of the bulb. With a screw-in base, these lamps offer easy installation and replacement. Single-ended halide lamps are ideal for general-purpose lighting in smaller-scale grow setups.
  • Double-Ended: Double-ended lamps incorporate electrical connections on both ends of the bulb, providing higher efficacy and light output. They are often preferred for professional and industrial settings. A double-ended metal halide lamp excels in performance and efficiency, making it a professional choice.

Elliptical - White-Lux Plus® for SON/HPS Ballasts White-Lux Plus® metal halide lamps can be used to convert the yellow light of sodium lamps in existing installations to clean white metal halide light. Operate on standard HPS ballasts and ignitors Formed body arc tube for fast starting Open and Enclosed versions available - please see technical specifications Metal Halide These lamps produce a clear white light and are suitable for display or floodlighting, where the heat output from tungsten halogen lamps would create a problem. Metal Halide Lamps have an efficiency approx. 4 times higher than halogen lamps and xenon lamps. In addition, the short-arc type is similar to a point light source, making optical design easy. As their colour temperature characteristics are similar to daylight colour, exact colours (RGB) can be reproduced. They can also be used for both high bay and low bay applications.,Compared to High Pressure Mercury lamps, Metal Halide lamps offer greater efficiencies and, compared to high pressure sodium (SON) lamps, they have similar advantages, but have different output characteristics. A disadvantage of metal halide lamps, when compared to SON lamps, is that they have a shorter service life.

Elliptical Elliptical diffused ’Powerstar®’ lamps for use in fittings with ignitor/starter circuits For use in applications where a soft light output and less glare is required Note These lamps require 2 to 10 minutes to cool before re-striking, but shorter times are possible if installed in fittings with high voltage ignitor circuits. Care must be taken NOT to touch the glass surface of the lamp during installation. Sylvania HID Lamps The Sylvania HID lamp is a fantastic high pressure sodium lamp. The Sylvania sodium lamp has a long life, uniformity of colour and excellent reliability, the high pressure sodium lamp is an energy efficient product that helps to save you money and reduce energy consumption. Ideal applications for these HID lamps are in car parks, street and floodlighting. Exceptional reliability Increased lighting levels Extended maintenance free service Long life between 24K to 32K hours Strong performance with high reliability Tubular Clear lamp Discharge SON Lamps These lamps combine high efficiency and long life with an improvement in colour appearance and rendering compared with low pressure lamps. SON lamps emit a golden-white light. The SON-T lamp, with its clear tubular outer envelope, lends itself to applications that demand precise optical control, e.g. floodlighting. The SON-E lamp, with its elliptical glass bulb, inside which a white diffusing coating is applied, suits other applications where such accuracy of light control is not so essential. An ignitor (internal or external) is used to supply the high voltage necessary for lamp strike up. Reliable strike up (when hot, less than 60 seconds) thus is ensured, and a simple choke is used to stop excessive voltage rise. The run-up time can be up to 6 minutes when cold.
