Shackles

Shackles are material lifting devices typically used in various industries and applications to secure, connect, or lift heavy objects or loads. These U-shaped or horseshoe-shaped metallic connectors are designed with a body and a removable pin or bolt. A lifting shackle is typically rated for specific load capacities (in tons) and can withstand the forces and stresses associated with its intended applications. Due to their nature of applications, shackles are made of rugged materials, including steel, stainless steel, and steel alloys to withstand heavy loads. In addition, shackles come in various sizes, shapes, and types to suit different purposes in various lifting operations.

Popular Types of Shackles:

Shackles come in different types and designs, each suited for specific purposes. Some popular types of shackles include:

  • Anchor Shackles –  Also called bow shackles, these durable tools feature a U-shaped design with a pin or bolt across the opening. They are commonly used for connecting chains, cables, or other rigging components. A steel bow shackle has a larger, rounded bow shape that provides a larger inner clearance compared to D shackles, making them suitable for a variety of applications.
  • D Shackles – D or Dee shackles have a D-shaped design with a threaded pin or bolt across the straight side of the "D." D shackle is popular for its strength, versatility, and reliability in various applications, including lifting, rigging, and securing loads.
  • Chain Shackles – These shackles have a bolt-type pin with a longer, narrower profile than regular anchor shackles. They are designed specifically for use with chains, providing a secure connection between chain links.
  • Screw Pin Shackles – These shackles have a threaded pin that can be easily screwed in and out of the shackle's body. They are convenient for temporary connections and are commonly used in non-critical applications where frequent assembly and disassembly are necessary.
  • Bolt Type Shackles – These have a removable bolt and nut that secure the pin in place. They provide a more secure and permanent connection compared to screw pin shackles and are commonly used in critical or high-load applications.
  • Safety Bolt Shackles – A safety bolt shackle is designed with a secondary retaining pin or safety bolt to prevent the main pin from accidentally loosening due to vibrations or other factors. They are commonly used in situations where the shackle's load must remain secure at all times.
  • Round Pin Shackles – Round pin shackles have a rounded pin that goes through the shackle body. They are commonly used in non-critical applications where ease of use and quick assembly and disassembly are essential.
  • Sling Shackles – Sling shackles are designed for use with synthetic or wire rope slings. They have a wider, flat bow to accommodate the sling and are often used in lifting and rigging operations.

Typical Applications of Shackles:

Shackles are multipurpose material lifting devices that find numerous applications across multiple domains, such as:

  • Rigging and Lifting: Shackles are frequently used in rigging and lifting operations to connect slings, ropes, or chains to heavy loads.
  • Maritime and Nautical Applications: In maritime and boating contexts, shackles are used to connect various components of rigging and sails, such as connecting sail halyards, sheets, and other lines.
  • Off-Roading and Towing: Shackles are best for off-road and towing situations to connect recovery straps, winch lines, or tow ropes to vehicles.
  • Construction and Building: In construction, shackles are used for various purposes, such as connecting structural elements, securing scaffolding, or lifting heavy construction materials.
  • Industrial and Manufacturing: Shackles are indispensable in industrial settings to connect and secure equipment, machinery, and parts. They can also be used for load testing and quality control.
