Earth testers, also called earth resistance testers, are specialised electrical test and measurement tools used in electrical engineering to evaluate the integrity of grounding systems. Purpose/Function of Earth Testers

The primary purpose of an earth tester is to verify that the grounding systems of electrical installations meet specified standards. These standards typically dictate the maximum allowable resistance between the grounding system and the Earth. By measuring this resistance, earth resistance testers help identify any potential issues, such as poor connections, corrosion, or inadequate grounding, which could lead to electrical hazards or equipment damage.

Popular Types of Earth Testers

There are several types of earth testers available, including:

• Fall-of-Potential Testers – These are the most common type of earth testers and involve driving stakes into the ground to create a circuit between the earth electrode under test and a remote earth electrode. They measure the voltage drop between these two points to calculate the earth's resistance.
• Clamp-On Testers – These testers are non-invasive and do not require driving stakes into the ground. Instead, they use a clamp to encircle the earth electrode, quickly measuring the magnetic field induced by the current flowing through the electrode. 
• Selective Testers – Selective testers are designed to measure the resistance of individual earth electrodes within a grounding system. They allow engineers to pinpoint specific issues within complex grounding networks.
