Optical audio cables, also called TOSLINK cables (from Toshiba Link, the very first developer), transfer digital audio signals as light pulses through a thin optical fibre cable. This method offers several benefits compared to conventional electrical audio cables. They ensure a reliable and high-quality digital audio signal in various applications, especially in settings where possible electromagnetic interference can be a problem. They exhibit extreme immunity to noise and galvanic isolation, which makes them an excellent choice for myriad digital audio applications.
Despite electrical signals, optical cables use light signals to transmit digital audio information. The core of the cable is a thin strand of either glass or plastic that transfers light through total internal reflection. At one side of the cable, an LED or laser diode transforms the electrical audio signal into light pulses. At the second end, a photodetector converts the light pulses back to an electrical signal that is understandable by the audio device.
