The era of profound technological shift
Gartner estimates that by the end of 2017, the number of things connected to the internet had outnumbered the world population. Everything from cars, drones to wearables are becoming very intelligently connected. IoT is promising to make the life of consumers efficient and convenient, enjoyable and predictable through enabling new services, business models, and experiences.
Moore’s Law and Metcalfe’s law
Gordon Moore observed that the number of transistors per square inch in IC’s had doubled every year since the invention of the IC. He further predicted that this trend would go into the foreseeable future. His prediction has held firm for a better part of its lifespan and in essence, has fueled the growth of IoT from a technological perspective. Moore’s law has seen the gadgets become more powerful, low cost and small form factor hence leveraging IoT
While the growth of IoT is being fueled by Moore’s law, its value is reflected in Metcalfe’s law that states that the value of a telecommunication network grows as the square of the number of nodes in the grows. Nothing reflects the truth of this statement more than IoT, the value of IoT has continued to grow as billions of things continue to be connected to the internet.

Inspiring the future
The most exciting thing about IoT is that it offers limitless opportunities. From smart irrigation, smart thermometers to smart security cameras. New innovative products continue to be discovered every day. Engineers continue to push the boundaries of what is possible through the incorporation of connectivity and computing capabilities. The innovation being witnessed goes beyond software as a lot of activity is happening within hardware ecosystem. The catalysts of this massive innovation are startups and entrepreneurs who tirelessly push the limits of possibilities.
To aid drive innovations QUALCOMM partnered with Arrow Electronics to introduce GradonBoard 410c a low cost, a very high-performance development platform that utilizes the same connectivity, location, imaging and computing available in today’s smartphones in a board the size of a credit card. The board is designed in a manner to support rapid software development and hardware prototyping which is ideal for enabling embedded computing and IoT products. This board is set to give IoT products like next-generation robots, vending machines, cameras and much more, a shot in the arm. This board is set to allow inventors who have big ideas to commercialize them fast.
The board was featured in #WhyWait Invent-off. A team of engineers used the DragonBoard 410c to come up with a safety feature that can be built into helmets and bicycles. The safety feature will send an SMS, email and even a tweet containing time and location of accident whenever the rider gets involved in an accident. Considering that one of the biggest causes of deaths in sporting activities is head trauma, this feature might go a long way in ensuring that the victim is able to get help even when they are not in a position to call for it. This goes a long way in revealing just what we can achieve when such powerful board lands in the hands of innovators. The DragonBoard 410c is certain to inspire the future of IoT.
